What are we?We are a small Breed Rescue Society that exists solely to help Belgian Shepherd Dogs and their owners who have dogs that need to be re-homed for a variety of reasons. These reasons vary from domestic problems, new babies in the house, loss of job or home or both, bereavement and many more.Unfortunately we can only help with pedigree dogs because the call on our small resources is already considerable and would be totally insufficient to help all the crossbreeds we hear about.
How do we work?We work in one of two ways: -1) People who have a dog that they need to re-home will contact the Rescue Co-ordinator who will talk to the owner about the problems and reasons for re-homing. The more information the owner can give us the better the chance we have of successfully re-homing that dog. We then arrange for a person with good Belgian Shepherd knowledge to come and see the dog and check that it is a true Belgian Shepherd and assess the temperament. Unless it is unavoidable we like to leave the dog in its home until a new owner has been found. This causes far less trauma to the dog as it does away with the need to kennel. At this stage it is sometimes possible to give advice to an owner that can help with behavioural problems and in many cases means the dog stays in the home. This is the best possible solution as it means the dog stays in a home where it is loved and the owner has been able to sort out a problem with the help of some behavioural advice. Rescue is always looking for good Foster homes because there are times when, in the best interests of the dog, it has to be moved quickly. If anyone can help in this way we would love to hear from you. 2) We also get calls from people who have had Belgian Shepherds or have seen them and would like to own one. Similar to the scenario above we like to get as much information as possible about the person wanting a dog, house details, fencing condition and height, and dog owning background. Hopefully the person carrying out the visit will take a Belgian Shepherd with them so that prospective owners who have no first hand experience of the breed can meet one at close quarters. The care of a B.S.D will also be discussed. How to care for the long coated varieties, how to feed and what their veterinary requirements are likely to be. If the above visit is successful the home checker will contact the Rescue Co-ordinator who in turn will talk to the prospective owner and try to match a dog to their requirements.
What are our Policies? Our rules and policies are few, but we do insist that all animals leaving us are neutered if this has not already been done and they must be vaccinated annually. We do not pass on Pedigrees or registration documents with any dogs homed. We do ask for a donation when we take a dog in and also when we re-home a dog. This is our only means of income and is very necessary to enable us to carry on the work of re-homing.
Wanting Homes. We do have some Tervueren, Gronendael and Malinois looking for homes at present. Rescue dogs can make great pets or working dogs.Do not be put off by the ages of some of these dogs, as at 7 years old the B.S.D is in its prime. For further details of individual dogs contact Jane on the above phone number or the E-mail Address.
